For that matter, why didn't God simply forgive us and not bother with the cross? April 2, As some will no doubt be preaching on Christ's death on Friday, there is one hugely important theological fact that must be kept uppermost in our minds as we consider his death on the cross.
Jesus himself testifies to his voluntary sacrifice: "For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father" Jn. He was without sin -- but on the cross all our sins were placed on Him, and He died in our place. If He hadn't done this we would have no hope of eternal life, because our sins would have kept us out of heaven. But He did go to the cross -- and because of that, we can be saved.
