You do not want to run out of power before the process is complete. On most ThinkPad laptops, the blue key is just above the top row of keys on the keyboard. The restore process also reinstalls other third-party software included on the computer when you first purchased it. During the restore process, enter a Windows username and password for the laptop when prompted. When prompted, press any key on the ThinkPad keyboard to restart the laptop. The ThinkPad will restart and boot into Windows.
Log on with the username and password you created during the restore process. Connect your external USB flash drive or hard drive to the laptop. If the Windows OS on your IBM ThinkPad T42 has been corrupted or infected by hard-to-remove viruses, your only option may be to restore the laptop's software to factory defaults and start over. Fortunately, this is easy to do on a ThinkPad T42 laptop. Back up data files only and not the programs on your computer. Restart the computer and press the "Access IBM" button above the top row of keys on your keyboard when you first see the IBM logo screen.

This new form of recovery allows the user to restore the preloaded operating system and software on the machine back to the original out of factory condition. The service partition can be accessed by pressing the Access ThinkPad button during startup.
